The 2027 BMW 3 Series: BMW’s Most Iconic Sedan Enters the Neue Klasse Era

Published on Oct 23, 2026 by Josiah Kaufman

For more than 50 years, the BMW 3 Series has been the car that defines the sport sedan, and for 2027 it begins a new chapter. The eighth-generation 3 Series brings the Neue Klasse era to the core of the BMW lineup with an all-new design, a reimagined digital experience, and a choice of powertrains that includes gasoline engines with 48V mild-hybrid technology and the first fully electric 3 Series, the BMW i3. Here’s a look at the lineup, the technology behind it, and how to decide which model fits the way you drive.

Overview

Four Models at Launch:
The 2027 BMW 3 Series 330, M350 xDrive, and i3 50 xDrive arrive in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2027, with the i3 M60 xDrive joining the range later in 2027.

Multiple Revolutionary Powertrains:
Gas or electric, every 3 Series shares the Neue Klasse design language, the BMW Panoramic iDrive display system, and the same driver-focused cabin.

A Digital Leap Forward:
A 17.9-inch Central Display, BMW Panoramic Vision, BMW Operating System X, and available hands-free highway driving at up to 85 mph bring the 3 Series into a new technology era.

What Neue Klasse Means for the 3 Series

Neue Klasse is BMW’s next-generation design language and technology platform. It debuted on the BMW iX3, and the new 3 Series is the first time it has reached the heart of the brand. The i3 is the second Neue Klasse model, and the gasoline 3 Series models carry the same design, interior, and digital experience. Sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology, 800V charging, and cylindrical-cell batteries are specific to the electric i3, while the gas models pair Neue Klasse design and technology with efficient combustion engines.

BMW is clear that these are one family. The i3 is the electric member of the 3 Series line, and BMW describes the lineup as distinct powertrain choices within one model family.

Meet the 2027 BMW 3 Series Lineup

Here are the four models available at launch. Base MSRPs are listed before a $1,350 destination and handling charge.

330 and 330 xDrive:

The foundation of the gasoline lineup starts at $49,900 for the rear-wheel-drive 330 and $51,900 for the 330 xDrive. Both use a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology, making 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, and both reach 60 mph in 5.9 seconds.

M350 xDrive:

The M Performance flagship of the gasoline range starts at $65,900. A 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology delivers 437 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque, standard xDrive all-wheel drive, and a 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds. It replaces the M340i.

i3 50 xDrive:

The fully electric launch model starts at $61,500. Dual-motor all-wheel drive produces 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque, with an estimated range of 446-468 miles and a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds.

The M Performance electric model arrives in 2027 with Gen6 M eDrive technology and two electric motors. BMW hasn’t yet published its full U.S. specifications or pricing.

A Design That Stays True to the 3 Series

The new 3 Series is slightly larger than its predecessor, with wider front and rear tracks, but it keeps the compact sport-sedan proportions BMW is known for. A 2.5-box silhouette, long wheelbase, short overhangs, and flared wheel arches give it a planted stance. The front end reinterprets the classic four-eyed face with a horizontal light signature that spans nearly the full width of the car, and the available Iconic Glow kidney grille adds contour lighting and three selectable welcome animations. At the rear, horizontal taillights with a three-dimensional L-shaped signature extend into the car’s muscular shoulders. Flush door handles extend automatically as you approach.

Because of the different underlying architectures, the electric and gasoline models differ slightly in size. The i3 measures 187.4 inches long with a 114.1-inch wheelbase, while the gasoline models measure 187.6 inches long with a 112.6-inch wheelbase. Eleven exterior colors are offered at launch, including Le Castellet Blue metallic, an exclusive finish for the 3 Series, with BMW Individual paint finishes expanding the palette during 2027.

Inside: BMW Panoramic iDrive

The cabin is built around BMW Panoramic iDrive, which combines four elements: BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects driving information across the full width of the lower windshield; the optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display; a redesigned multifunction steering wheel with Shy Tech controls that light up only when needed; and a 17.9-inch free-cut Central Display angled toward the driver. Physical controls remain for key functions including the parking brake, hazard lights, and audio volume. A panoramic glass roof is standard.

The software is BMW Operating System X, built on the Android Open Source Project and designed to receive updates after purchase. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, enhanced with Amazon Alexa+ technology, responds to natural speech rather than fixed commands. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

The Driving Experience

Gasoline models get a thoroughly revised chassis, with a wider track, a longer wheelbase, new steering ratios, and an upgraded integrated braking system. Adaptive suspension is optional, and Adaptive M Suspension is standard on the M350 xDrive. The electric i3 uses BMW’s Heart of Joy high-performance computer, which controls the drive system, brakes, steering subfunctions, and energy recuperation up to ten times faster than previous systems, while its flat battery gives it a low center of gravity. Each powertrain gets its own tuned BMW Driving Stack, so the character stays recognizably BMW.

Driving Assistant Plus is standard on every model, with adaptive speed and distance control, steering assistance, and speed limit recognition. The available Highway Assist enables attentive hands-free driving on suitable limited-access highways at up to 85 mph. BMW Symbiotic Drive lets you steer, brake, or accelerate without immediately canceling the assistance. Optional parking features include Parking Assistant Professional, which can park the car remotely from up to 20 feet away using the My BMW App.

Gas or Electric: Which 3 Series Fits You?

Choose the 330 or 330 xDrive if you want the classic 3 Series experience with efficient four-cylinder power and the lowest entry price. Choose the M350 xDrive if you want inline-six performance and M Performance hardware. Choose the i3 50 xDrive if you want a fully electric sedan with up to 468 miles of estimated range, fast 800V charging, and a standard NACS charge port, or wait for the i3 M60 xDrive if you want the electric M Performance experience. Each model has its own detailed guide linked below.
